"Netherton Utd reject promotion to Step 6 football"

jon eyles3 Mar 2021 - 17:21

Netherton Utd confirm the decision to turn down the offer of Step 6 football with the Spartan South Midlands Football League for season 2021/22.

The FA are introducing a revised geographical re-structure for Step 6 clubs and above and with approved ground facility standards and the 1st team's run of success at Step 7 level (including finishing top of the PDFL Prem Division and reaching two major Cup Finals in the previous null and void season), the FA accepted the club into the higher grade.

However in view of the disruption and uncertainty that has impacted grassroots football over the past twelve months, added to a still unclear future and the ridiculous travel distances incurred with the new league, the news to reject promotion and remain happily with the PDFL is unsurprising and an easy call to make.

The past 12 months or so has given us all the opportunity to reflect. to re-prioritise life and appreciate what we have and may have taken for granted.

In grassroots football terms it makes complete sense to remain where we are - to remain with the PDFL who operate an excellent well-run league, to continue to enjoy being a winning Prem Division side playing a good standard of competitive football against other good local sides with the added mix of friendly and spirited rivalries - all of which is socially rewarding and should be what football is all about regardless of the level.

NUFC is in a fortunate position where the club can enjoy all the benefits of higher status league football (excellent playing facilities, entry into higher level cup competitions, healthy financial sustainability) without the liabilities ( extra volunteer workload, extra travelling, extra cost, extra hassle).

There is no longer a compelling reason to join a higher grade when the club already has those benefits and the loss of one and possibly two meaningful seasons means the 1st team has unfinished business at this level in any event.

Looking to the future, the club's ambition remains to be an outstanding community club with first-class facilities and deliver the best provision of competitive and social football we can for all ages, gender and ability.

The club will continue to invest in our well-managed playing facilities - new contemporary box goals are due to arrive for the 3G this month - and new LED floodlights and an upgraded playing surface next year.

We'll continue to focus on developing the club which has seen so many successful initiatives both on and off the pitch especially over the past 4/5 years and aim to remain at the forefront of local football for all the right reasons.

We look forward to grassroots football returning shortly and moving into a brighter, positive and more certain future.
