This morning, the Netherton United U12 Blacks made the short trip to face Thurlby Tigers Whites, full of confidence following a positive start to their season.

The boys began with fantastic energy, and their high-pressure game plan paid off immediately. Our lightning-quick centre forward forced an early turnover, setting the tone for a dominant first half. The Thurlby defence stood strong and organised, repelling wave after wave of attack for the first twenty minutes.

The relentless pressure finally told. After the Netherton keeper collected a Thurlby attack, his quick and accurate throw released our explosive striker. With a clear run on goal, he showed great composure to slot the ball home.

Just five minutes later, a driving run down the right wing led to a low, hard cross. The resulting tap-in at the back post doubled our advantage. Netherton continued to control the game, looking dangerous with every forward surge. Just before the break, a clever through-ball sent our roving centre midfielder clear, only to be denied by a brave save from the Thurlby goalkeeper.

The second half started with Thurlby pushing hard, reminding everyone they were still in the contest. The following ten minutes were a scrappy affair, with neither side able to maintain possession for long.

The momentum then swung decisively back in Netherton’s favour. Our jet-heeled right winger won the ball high up the pitch, drove into the box, and finished coolly past the keeper. This seemed to finally break the resolve of the rugged Thurlby defence.

From that point on, the boys played some magnificent football. A highlight was a wonderful team goal, involving a long interchange of passes between four players, which was finally tucked away after the goalkeeper had made an initial great save.

There was still time for a moment of individual brilliance, as our powerful left winger beat his man with some neat footwork and curled a beautiful shot into the top corner from the edge of the area—a fantastic and well-deserved reward for his hard work.

Credit must go to Thurlby Tigers, who defended resolutely throughout and never gave up, making our boys work for every opportunity.

The entire squad was delighted with another strong team performance, maintaining their perfect start to the season as we look ahead to the next challenge.
