Netherton United U10 Black Show Great Character in Season Opener

A display of real heart and teamwork saw Netherton United’s U10 Black side put in a fantastic performance against a competitive Ketton Yellow team this weekend.

Facing an early challenge with a reduced squad, the boys started the game with incredible energy and positivity. They immediately took control, playing a high-tempo passing game and spending the opening exchanges camped in the opposition’s half. Against the run of play, Ketton managed to break away and take an early lead, which was a real test of the team’s spirit.

The character shown was magnificent. After a few minutes to settle, the boys began to play their football again and found a deserved equaliser. It came from a wonderful first-time strike by our roving centre-back, Hugo, who powered the ball into the net with real aplomb.

This goal ignited the team’s confidence. A fierce high press from our forward and a battling midfielder won the ball back high up the pitch. What followed was a thing of beauty: a quick series of one-twos between the front three that sliced through the defence, ending with our left winger smashing the ball home from close range to complete the turnaround.

Ketton were fired up and applied pressure before the break, but our keeper pulled off a fine save and our goal-scoring defender, Hugo, made a brilliant last-ditch block to preserve the advantage heading into half time.

The second half began with Ketton pushing for a way back into the game, putting several troubling balls into our box, but our defence stood firm. Soon, Netherton relaxed and began to move the ball around with confidence again, creating a couple of half-chances that forced their keeper into smart saves.

As the game became more open, chances came at both ends. Our boys created the clearer opportunities, with a third goal just eluding us due to some good goalkeeping and near misses. The game was sealed in the final stages when our midfielder picked up a loose ball and played a stunning 20-yard pass right to the feet of our striker, who took one touch and finished with a superb first-time shot for his first goal of the season—a moment everyone was thrilled to see!

There were further chances to add another goal as we broke through their line, but the final touch was just missing. Ketton had a late flurry of efforts, but our keeper was equal to them, making a great save down to his right to ensure the result.

It was a superb morning’s work and a fantastic first win of the new season. The boys executed the game plan perfectly, showing both goal-scoring flair and defensive resilience. A special mention must go to Hugo for a truly all-action performance, contributing at both ends of the pitch. Well done to everyone involved
